Three Jaish-e-Mohammad terrorists, including one who was behind the killing of BJP worker Rakesh Pandita in June, were gunned down in an encounter with security forces in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama district on 21 Aug (Saturday). Security forces personnel had launched a cordon-and-search operation in the upper reaches of the forest area of Nagbaeran Tral in the south Kashmir district.

15./Two Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) personnel were killed in a Naxal attack near ITBP camp Kademeta in Narayanpur district of Chhattisgarh on 20 Aug ( Friday). The Naxals attacked the 45th battalion of ITBP at around 12.10 pm.

16. A team of 120 National Security Guard (NSG) commandos conducted an anti-terror mock drill in a hotel in Indore on 20 Aug (Friday). The mock drill was conducted to test the preparedness of NSG commandos in preventing any 26/11-type terror attack in Indore. The mock drill operation was aimed at capturing terrorists holed up in a hotel and freeing guests taken as hostages.

1. India has been allowed to operate two flights per day from Kabul to evacuate its nationals stranded in Afghanistan.

2. Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on 20 Aug  (Friday) provided details about India's mission to evacuate all citizens stranded in Afghanistan after the Taliban takeover. Speaking at an event marking the commencement of  new Three flights.

3. The permission has been granted by the American and North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) forces which have been controlling operations of the Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul after the Afghan capital fell to the Taliban on August 15. More than 300 Indian nationals have to be taken out of Kabul.

4. India and Russia  signed a deal for the immediate off-the-shelf procurement of 70,000 latest AK 200 series of assault rifles,  A deal of jointly manufacture  AK-203 rifles in India has been pending since 2018.

5. Indian Army on 20 Aug (Friday) safely repatriated three children of a Pakistan occupied Jammu and Kashmir (POJK) village who had on 18 Aug (Wednesday) crossed the Line of Control (LOC) in the Poonch Sector.

6. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on August 20 held talks with his Qatari counterpart Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani on the situation in Afghanistan as he made a stopover in Doha on his way back from the US. Qatar's capital Doha has been the venue for the intra-Afghan peace talks

1. Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has said that India is committed to bringing back its citizens from Afghanistan after  Taliban took over.  According to Puranas Onam is connected with King Mahabali and the golden era of his reign. The prominent story behind Onam is about King Mahabali and Vamanan (the incarnation of Lord Vishnu).

According to the story, King Mahabali is sent to another world called Pathala by Lord Vishnu's incarnation, Vamana.

King Mahabali, according to the legend of Onam, is said to be the grandson of Prahalad and son of Veerochana, who were demons or asuras. So, Mahabali was an asura too, but he had no trait of it because he was fervid towards Lord Vishnu from his childhood. Due to the piety to Lord Vishnu, Mahabali attained power and strength.  Once, Maha Bali was performing a yagna, when a short, young, radiant boy entered the yagna shala. Maha Bali, as was the custom, welcomed this radiant youngster and asked him what he wanted. The young boy requested for that much space, as could be measured by three footsteps of his.

Maha Bali agreed at once to the chagrin of his Guru Shukracharya who cautioned him that the guest was none other than Lord Vishnu Himself.

As the legend goes, no sooner were the three footsteps granted, the young Vamana assumed a gigantic form known as Trivikrama and with the first step of his foot, measured the whole earth. Then with the second step of his foot, he measured the whole sky. These two steps covered the whole of Mahabali’s kingdom, the earth and the sky. Vamana then asked the king as to where he should place his third step.

King Maha Bali the grandson of the greatest of the Lord’s devotees, Prahlada joyfully offered his head for the third step in utter devotion and surrender.

The Lord recognizing his attitude of surrender blessed him and sent him to Pathala with a promise of making him Indra in the next Manvanthara and that He Himself would guard the gates of Pathala.

Acceding to the request of Maha Bali’s people, Vishnu granted Maha Bali permission to return to his kingdom from Pathala, once every year, to be in the midst of his people. This day is celebrated as the Onam festival.

7. Pak police arrest 15 people for harassing, molesting YouTuber girl

Hundreds of young men can be seen in the videos throwing the girl in the air for fun, dragging her, tearing her clothes and molesting her. The incident took place on August 14 when hundreds of youngsters were celebrating Independence Day at Azadi Chowk near Minar-i-Pakistan in Lahore.  Pak PM Imran Khan has also taken notice of the sexual assault of the girl and ordered IGP Inam Ghani to arrest those responsible for the assault.

 The word " Muharram " means "Forbidden" and is derived from the word harām, meaning "sinful". It is held to be the second holiest month, following Ramadan. Some Muslims fast during these days. The tenth day of Muharram is the Day of Ashura, which to Shia Muslims is part of the Mourning of Muharram.

Sunni Muslims fast during this day, because it is recorded in the hadith that Musa (Moses) and his people obtained a victory over the Egyptian Pharaoh on the 10th day of Muharram; accordingly Muhammad asked Muslims to fast on this day that is Ashura and on a day before that is 9th.

They observe and respect Muharram as the month that killed Hussein ibn Ali, the grandson of Muhammad and son of Ali, in the Battle of Karbala.

The Battle of Karbala took place on Muharram 10, in the year 61 AH of the Islamic calendar (October 10, 680 AD) in Karbala, situated in present-day Iraq. The battle was between a small group of supporters and relatives of Muhammad's grandson Hussein ibn Ali, and a much larger military detachment from the forces of Yazid I, the Umayyad caliph, to whom Hussein had refused to give an oath of allegiance. Hussein and all his supporters were killed, including Hussein's six-month-old infant son, The dead are regarded as martyrs by both Sunni and Shia Muslims.

The Supreme Court on 18 Aug (Wednesday) passed an interim order allowing women to take the admission exam to National Defence Academy (NDA), which was previously only open to men.  The top court directed that women can sit for exams for entry in NDA,  The admission to the academy will be subject to the final orders of the Court.

22. NDA II 2021 written exam is scheduled to be conducted on November 14 across 75 exam centres spread throughout the country. Earlier, the exam was scheduled to be conducted on September 5. However, it was postponed by UPSC after reviewing the prevailing situation due to COVID-19 pandemic. NDA (II) 2021 admit card for the written exam will be released in October.

23. UPSC has announced NDA (I) & (II) 2022 exam dates. According to UPSC Calendar 2022, NDA (I) 2022 exam will be conducted on April 10, 2022. While NDA (II) 2022 exam will be conducted on September 4, 2022.

 The science behind Navratri Fasting: Why you are not allowed to eat onion and garlic

According to Ayurveda, foods can be divided into three categories:-

 A. Raajasic foods

B. Taamasic foods 

Rajas and Tamas are referred to things that are unripe, weak, resentful and destructive. During Navratri, people are supposed to denounce the worldly pleasure

 C. Saatvik foods : Saatvik foods include fresh fruits, curd, rock salt, seasonal vegetables and subtle spices like coriander and black pepper.

 Onion and garlic are considered to be taamsic in nature and are said to invoke carnal energy in the body. Onions also produce heat in the body and thus are not allowed during the Navratri fast. Garlic along with onion is known as Rajogini, which means a substance that can make one lose grip over their instincts. This makes it difficult to differentiate between your desires and priorities.

The process goes as follows:

Lachrymatory-factor synthase is released into the air when we cut an onion. The synthase enzyme converts the amino acids sulfoxides of the onion into sulfenic acid. The unstable sulfenic acid rearranges itself into 

Syn-propanethial-S-oxide gets into the air and comes in contact with our eyes. The lachrymal glands become irritated and produces the tears!

Onion and garlic came from the dead body of a murdered cow and therefore they are considered like eating meat. They break the non-vegetarian principle from the shastric point of view. Strict vegetarians don't eat onion nor garlic. Since meat is tamasic, onions and garlic are also tamasic and rajasic food. They may have some medicinal value like even wine is used in medicines sometimes. Thus they are taboo for followers of Vedic culture. 

 "Once, in Satya Yuga the rishis were performing gomedha and asvamedha sacrifices for the welfare of the whole universe. A cow or a horse would be cut into pieces and placed in the fire. Afterwards the rishis would utter mantras and the same animal would come alive in a beautiful young body.

One time the rishi who was about to perform a gomedha sacrifice, his wife was pregnant. She had a very strong desire to eat and she had heard that if, during pregnancy one has a desire to eat and does not fullfill this, then the baby that will be born will always have saliva coming from its mouth. Very strange, she desired strongly to eat meat, thus she decided to keep one piece of meat of the cow's body that was offered in sacrifice. She hid it and was making a plan to eat it very soon. At that time the rishi was finishing the sacrifice and uttered all the mantras for the new young cow to come to life. However when he saw the new cow, he noticed that there was a little part missing from her left side. He went into meditation and realized that his wife had taken away a piece of meat during the sacrifice. Now his wife also understood what happened and quickly threw the meat far away. 

Due to the effect of the mantras uttered by the rishi there was now life in this piece of meat. Then the blood of this meat became red lentils, the bones became garlic and the meat became onions. Thus these foods are never taken by any Vaishnava situated in the mode of goodness as Vaishnavas should be because it is not considered by us as offerable due to its association as a non-vegetarian food. Plus it is in the mode of ignorance." 

"It is not vegetarian to eat onions and garlic. They have discovered 21 different types (?) of slow poison in both. So they are not so innocent."

 1. United Kingdom expresses willingness for collaborating with India on Green Hydrogen Energy. India has already retired 16369 MW of inefficient thermal units till March, 2021. Social media giant Facebook confirmed on 16 Aug that it designates the Taliban a terrorist group and bans it and content supporting it from its platforms.

6. Incepta Pharmaceuticals will bring the ingredients of the vaccine from China in bulk. The bottling, labelling and finishing will be done in Bangladesh which is likely to make the vaccine relatively cheap.

7. Militants in Gaza Strip fired rocket at Israel on 16 Aug. The rocket was however intercepted by Iron Dome anti-missile system of Israel.

It was the first such attack since 11-day war in May 2021.

8. A female news anchor was seen interviewing a Taliban spokesperson on ToloNews today. Women were absent from TV screens since August 15, the day Taliban took control over Kabul. It’s a shift from Taliban’s earlier regime in between 1996-2001 where women were not allowed to work.

On 29 July 1948, the day of the Opening Ceremony of the London 1948 Olympic Games, Dr. Guttmann organised the first competition for wheelchair athletes which he named the Stoke Mandeville Games, a milestone in Paralympic history. They involved 16 injured servicemen and women who took part in archery.

5. Union Minister of Youth Affairs & Sports Anurag Thakur interacted with the World Youth Archery Championship winners during an event on 17 Aug (Tuesday) & congratulated them for making the nation proud.

 SATYABHAMA , also known as, Satrajiti, is the third consort of the Lord Shri Krishna. Satyabhama is believed to be an avatar of Bhumī Devī. 

Satyabhama was the daughter of Yadava King Satrajit, the royal treasurer of Dwaraka, who was the owner of the Syamantaka jewel. Satrajit, who secured the jewel from the sun-god Surya and would not part with it even when Krishna, the king of Dwarka, asked for it saying it would be safe with him. Shortly thereafter, Prasena, the brother of Satrajit went out hunting wearing the jewel but was killed by a lion. Jambavan, known for his role in the Ramayana, killed the lion and gave the jewel to his daughter Jambavati. When Prasena did not return, Satrajit falsely accused Krishna of killing Prasena for the sake of the jewel.

Krishna, in order to remove the stain on his reputation, set out with his men in search of the jewel and found it in Jambavan's cave, with his daughter. Jambavan attacked Krishna thinking him to be an intruder who had come to take away the jewel. They fought each other for 28 days, when Jambavan, whose whole body was terribly weakened from the incisions of Krishna's sword, finally recognised him as Rama and surrendered to the lord.

As repentance for his having fought Krishna, Jambavan gave Krishna the jewel and also his daughter Jambavati in marriage. Krishna returned the jewel to Satrajit, who in turn apologized for his false accusation. He promptly offered to give Krishna the jewel and his daughter Satyabhama, in marriage. Krishna accepted them but refused the jewel.
